Fiona’s art practice is centered around an investigation into the relationship between form and materiality. She utilises ambiguous abstract forms for their ability to concurrently carry multiple signifiers therefore misconstruing or questioning the creation of meaning. Fiona works with traditional printmaking mediums, such as etching and engraving, her printmaking employs a vocabulary of geometric forms and is concerned with the relationship between image and the picture plane. She also works in a range of sculptural materials, which often take the form of multi-part installations.
Fiona studied at Elam School of Fine Arts, in Auckland, graduating in 2011 with first class honours (BFA Hons).

Tracing Circles – Monotype, 2021
A small, bright, and fun monotype. This little print is all about gesture, and the beauty of imperfection.
Subtle Noise – Monotype, 2021
This somewhat chaotic ground has been subject to quiet decoration. The repetition of a square, the mark of a hand. This work puts the coincidental mark first, the texture and interest created by a ghost print is the framework on which this image is built.
Simple Shapes – Monotype 2021
Crisp geometric forms are complemented by haphazard gestural marks. Balance is found between colour and form, the circular and the rectilinear. The bold and the quiet. Look for the white square.
From a Purple Triangle – Monotype 2021
A plethora of textures imbue this geometric composition with plenty of areas of interest; of intersection, of layers. These countless moments find their homes between the hues, in the tension and the balance.
Clean Forms – Monotype 2021
A simple composition of geometric forms, balanced through colour and shape. Oriented by the heavy deep teal, the buzzing mark of a roller.
Te Henga – Etching and screenprint, 2020
This etching is an abstracted interpretation of the sight and feeling of the hills meeting the sea, when the mists from the roaring waves obscure their form and only a hazy outline may be glimpsed. The air smells so fresh.
Floating – Etching and embossing, 2019
A floating form, imagined and organic. Balanced and complemented by the embossed circles which are heavy in their size, and echo the playful background of this strange shape.
Expanded Reduction Composition – Woodblock 2017
Bold and bright, this fun woodcut explores reduction woodblock printing through the creation of a variable edition, each a unique composition consisting of the same seven geometric forms.
Still Water – Etching and monotype, 2016
A flock of shapes converge at what may be a murky window, the ghastly green gives way to traced geometries which push forward, yet float away, straying from the group. An intriguing combination of gestural and mathematical forms.
Polygons (κρύες γωνίες) – Engraving over watercolour, 2014
These engravings are the two dimensional expression of the irregular geometric solids they are exhibited with, alongside some ideas of explosion or compression. The Greek title which means cold corners, is a play on the etymology of the word polygon and representative of the cool colour scheme.
Gazing into the Sun – Etching, 2014
Marking space, mapping space, repeating forms. Dizzying patterns start to appear, the simplicity of repetition. Finished with hand colouring this etching celebrates the flatness of the picture plane.
Untitled – Etching over Screen, 2011
Heavily heaped stacks of cubes, etched in purple are central to this composition which is overlaid with vibrant colours, each asserting their crisp form, creating a busy balance.
Geometric Perspectives – Screen print, 2011
A lightness of touch is present in this white on white background, the mark of the hand is evident in the loose lines. Simply sketched, then overlaid with colourful forms, hinting at a perspectival space.
Gesture, Shape, Image – Screen print, 2010
This screenprint combines layers of different types of image making, as suggested in the title; a gestural negative, strong non-regular geometric shapes, and illusionistic images. The overlay of pink and blue is playfully echoed in the purple shapes.
